Nearly 150 people are abandoned on a raft. The drift will last 13 days leading to mutiny, drownings, fights and acts of cannibalism. The two surviving scientists, Corréard and Savigny, recount their ordeal in this book, causing a resounding scandal and great emotion in Restoration France. The incompetence of the commander and the officers is pointed out. Théodore Géricault illustrated the book with several engravings before painting the edifying picture The Raft of the Medusa in 1819.

Fourth edition entirely revised, decorated with eight engravings by M. Géricault, and other artists.

The work of the Toulon Library includes a dedication of the author, signed A. Corréard, a portrait painted in colors and engravings drawn by Théodore Géricault.
