L’encens provient d’une résine tirée d’un arbre originaire d’Asie. Dès l’Antiquité, il est utilisé pour parfumer aussi bien en Egypte qu’en Grèce ou encore en Chine. Il fait partie des produits précieux commercialisés sur la route de la soie dans toute l’Asie et jusqu’en Europe. L’encens est aussi utilisé lors des rituels chrétiens ou bouddhiques. Dans la tradition bouddhique, l’encens est employé pour le culte des ancêtres. Au Vietnam, l’offrande d’encens permet d’entrer en relation avec les êtres immatériels. La fumée qui s’en dégage établit un lien entre les vivants et les morts.
